Finding the right marketplace category by search

The Target Marketplace Category picker is a semantic search — describe the product and the closest categories appear, ranked by meaning rather than exact keyword match.

Type what the product is, not a category name

Wherever you pick a Target Marketplace Category — creating or editing a product, re-classifying a row in the Review queue, or fixing a publish error from the Smart Bulk panel — the category picker is a semantic search, not a keyword filter. Describe the product ("running shoes", "laptop stand") and the closest marketplace categories appear, ranked by how well they match the meaning of what you typed.

Typing 'running shoes' into the category search returns Athletic Shoes and other close matches, ranked by meaning rather than exact word match.
Describe the product; the closest categories rise to the top.

Why this beats browsing a tree

Marketplace category trees run thousands of nodes deep, and the name you'd guess ("Trainers") is often not the name the marketplace actually uses ("Athletic Shoes"). Semantic search closes that gap: it matches on meaning, so a synonym, a UK/US spelling difference, or a slightly different phrasing still finds the right node. Your own internal category name (if the product already has one) quietly sharpens the search — it isn't linked to the result, just used as extra context.

Picking a result

Each result shows the full path down to the node — for example "Clothing, Shoes & Jewelry › Men › Shoes › Athletic › Running" — so you can see exactly where a product will sit before you commit. Selecting one fills the picker and, on the AI Review row and bulk-reclassify flows, immediately recalculates the category's required attributes — a change here is deterministic and free, with no AI call and no credits spent.
